Weddings are like snowflakes – each and everyone is different! And honestly? That’s my favorite part of being a wedding videographer. I love capturing days that feel like you, not like a production. I want to capture the things that truly make your wedding yours, each little bit of your personality that has seeped into your wedding day. My approach is to capture real, raw moments, not unnatural posed ones. Each of my wedding films are always tailored to the couple, but these five ideas (that you can plan in advance) can make your wedding video seriously feel like you!

Wedding Videography Ideas to Make Your Wedding Video Super Personal:

With wedding inspiration virtually everywhere nowadays, it can be tough to feel like you’re not just slipping into the cracks, creating a cookie-cutter wedding day. That’s why it’s so important to infuse elements into your day that are special to you as a couple! It makes it more grounded, more unique, and more authentic – and that’s what makes a great wedding video. See 5 wedding videography ideas that will really make your personality shine through!

  1. Create Moments That Are Unique to You As a Couple

A special handshake. Praying together. Incorporating your dog. These special moments? They shine through in your wedding video – trust me.

I had the honor of filming James and Hannah’s wedding back in April, and let me just say, their personalities really showed. They added a unique moment into their wedding day in the form of a choreographed first dance. They love dancing together and wanted to share a moment doing just that on their big day, and it truly took their wedding video up a notch.

  1. Lean Into Unplanned Moments

My #1 wedding tip will always be to not fret over the little things. Weddings are always going to have unplanned moments pop up! Your reaction to them is what will truly set the tone for your day.

One of my favorite unplanned moment stories from any wedding I’ve ever shot is from James and Hannah’s. They’re going through the motions of their sweet, heartfelt ceremony, they share their first kiss, and then as they’re walking down the aisle as husband and wife… they get turned around because the officiant forgot to have them exchange rings! The couple could have let this bother them or ruin their day, but instead, it turned into a celebration and a hilarious story that they’ll never forget. How many others can say they have that in their wedding video?

  1. Write Personal Vows or Letters to Each Other

Writing letters or personal vows is a super simple way to add so much depth and emotion to your wedding video. Capturing these moments almost makes me shed a tear every time. Having that moment that’s just shared between the two of you? So special.

  1. Incorporate Cultural or Family Traditions

What better way to honor your family than to include lifelong traditions on your wedding day? Whether it’s a cultural aspect that’s been important in your life or something that your grandparents did at their wedding, it’s a great way to infuse the personality of you as a couple into your wedding video. This could look like incorporating a specific song that’s important to your family, having a very sentimental something borrowed, or performing a classic dance from your culture!

  1. Be Open to Wearing a Mic

Last but definitely not least, be open to wearing a mic. As a wedding videographer, audio is what truly sets wedding videos apart because it tells the full story of the day. You’re not limited to wearing a mic during just the ceremony either – I personally love to include sound bites from things like your first look, your portrait session, and your first dance too. Sometimes, the funniest and most personal things are said and not shown.

James and Hannah’s Dreamy Wedding Day:

James and Hannah’s day is the perfect inspiration for anyone who wants a wedding video that feels personal. They had so many unique moments – even ones that weren’t necessarily planned – that really shone through in their video! The day wouldn’t have come together so perfectly if it weren’t for the dream team of vendors listed here:
